The Kool Kid that's directing his discussion

1. Why might Johnny have told Ponyboy to "stay gold" ?

2. Why would Dally have wanted to die?

3. Why might Ponyboy not have called for Darry while being delirious?

4. Why did Randy come to see Ponyboy?

5. Why was Darry confused about Soda not telling Ponyboy about Sandy?

6. Why might Ponyboy have asked Mr Syme about the length of the theme?

7. How would you imagine the end of the book if you replaced Ponyboy with Johnny?

8.  What made Ponyboy decide that he could tell people his story?

9. How did Ponyboy start his theme?

10. Why might Ponyboy have started his theme like that?

Connections

1.The Outsiders reminds me of my mothers work . She is always telling me stories about the gangs around the neighbourhood and how dangerous they are. They are called The Bloods, and The Crips. Who set buses on fire, break into cars, and are always getting into fights/ rumbles with each other, like The Socs and The Greasers.  This helps me understand the story better because I realized how everyone else around them in the story must have felt, and how scared they must have been.

2.The novel "The Outsiders" has the same concept as Broadway musical called " West side story". In West Side Story, the Puerto Ricans make up the Sharks, and the Americans  make up the Jets.  In The Outsiders, the rich teenagers make up the Socs, and the less fortunate make up the Greasers. in these two stories the gangs are divided by race, and by class. This helped my understand The Outsiders better because, all the people in these stories are the same but they are just judged differently.

3.This book reminds me a lot about reality, people focus more on stereotypes and looks than what's on the inside. Like in "The Outsiders" People judged the Greasers because they  are known for harassing, and giving people a hard time. That was why everyone was so shocked when johnny, and Ponyboy saved the children and turned out to be heroes, because everyone thought that they were the "bad guys". This helped me understand the story better because now I wonder if people changed their opinions on the Greasers after the incident.

4."The Outsiders" reminds me of Shakespeare's play, "Romeo and Juliet".Pony boy, and Romeo were  laid back, low life's, while Cherry and Juliet were affluent, and well-heeled. But even though Ponyboy was a greaser and Cherry was a Soc, they still became great friends. Just like Romeo and Juliet, even though her parents disagreed and he wasn't as wealthy as her they still got married. This helped me understand more about why Cherry betrayed the Socs for the Greasers.

1- How might you have ended the book differently?
2- Why would Johnny write the letter to Ponyboy?
3- How might Ponyboy's life change for the better?
4- Why would Ponyboy want to believe Johnny was still alive?
5- Why should Ponyboy care so much about his grades?
6- Why might have the author killed of Dally and Johnny?
7- How could the book change if Johnny didn't die and got caught for Bob's murder?
8- How will the lives of all the other boy's play out?
9- How could the Greasers and the Socs get along?
10- Why did Ponyboy keep saying he killed Johnny?
11- Why might Randy feel so much sympathy for Ponyboy?
12- What might have happened if Johnny didn't stop Bob from drowning Ponyboy?
13- What would happen to Ponyboy if he got sent to a boy's home?
                   Passage Picker:

1.My first passage is when Ponyboy thought "I shouldn't be here, and Steve shouldn't be here, and Soda shouldn't be here, and Two-bit shouldn't be here, were greasers but not hoods, we don't belong here with this bunch of future convicts" before the rumble.

This is important to the story because Ponyboy believes that they shouldn't be there, like they're different from the others and they should have it better. He believes that they deserve it better because of how hard they work and mow close to a family they are.

2. My second passage is right before johnny died, he said "stay gold, ponyboy stay gold.."

This is important to the story because johnny a key part in the story has just died. His death caused many things afterwards as well such as dallys death. Also johnny made a reference to his favorite poem when he said that, i think he was telling ponyboy not to change anything about himself.

3.  My third Passage is when Ponyboy thought to himself "I knew he would be dead, because dallas winston wanted to be dead, and he always got what he wanted."

This is important to the story because dally, another important character in the story died.He died because he raised a gun at the police and they shot him, it had another devastating emotional effect on the gang, they were all emotionally unstable.

Summary

Chapter 6-9

In chapters 6-9 of the outsiders, Johny and Ponyboy were trying to put out a fire in the church they were staying at but when Johny breaks his back on the way out, the Greasers get back together and prepare for the "rumble" with the Socs. In the chapters assigned this week, I found that Johny and Ponyboy's intrepidity was further demonstrated than in preceding chapters because they rescued young children that Johny and Ponyboy didn't know. I found these valorous actions especially astonishing because "Greasers" tend not to act as the heroes in town and yet they still saved the children. Coming out of the church after saving the children, a part of the roof of the church falls on Johny and breaks Johny's back while Dally's arm got burned from the fire when he went to try and help Johny. Johny and Ponyboy's actions were noticed and before they knew it, they were surrounded by reporters. Darry and Sodapop found out that Johny was injured and came to see Johny and Ponyboy. When Darry and Sodapop arrived at the hospital where Johny and Dally were staying, Ponyboy and Soda hugged each other right away but, when Darry saw Ponyboy he started to cry which was rare for him. Ponyboy, Soda and Darry got back together and things began to go a lot better. After they went home, the next day, Darry and Soda had to work so Two-Bit looked after Ponyboy for the day. They went outside for a walk when the Socs blue Mustang pulled up. Randy the Soc explained to Ponyboy that Randy wasn't going to come to the rumble because he believes that it won't gain or achieve anything if they fight. After the death of his friend Bob the Soc, Randy became sick of fights. Towards the end of the chapters that were assigned, Cherry Valance told Two-Bit and Ponyboy that the Socs were gonna fight fairly at the rumble, no weapons, the same way as the Greasers were going to fight. I predict that the Greasers and the Socs will come face to face but, decide not to fight and to live as friends from then on.

Connector- lauryn

Text to self- The book The Outsiders I find is about family and friends sticking up for one another. This reminds me of how I would do anything for my friends and that family only wants what's best for you. In the story Johnny and Ponyboy jump inside a burning building to save the lives of children they didn't even know. This connection helps me realize that no matter who you are or where you came from we can all have are superhero moments.

Text to media- After reading 3/4 of the book The Outsiders, it reminds me of the movie Grease and how there's gender groups like the Pink lady's and the Blue Birds and how Sandy had to change her appearance to be with Danny. This really makes me understand that back then and even now, different classes of living and genders are treated unfairly.

Text to world- In the Outsiders book there's going to be a rumble between the Socs and the Greasers. The connection I made to this is when the shooting at the new outlet happened between the two gangs during the holidays. I now understand that maybe fictional and real life aren't so different after all, and how violent we actually are.

Text to self- The Outsiders is based on a 60's timeline. The connection I made this part of the book is that both of my parents were born in the late 60's, and how i've always wanted to see what it would be like to live back then. When i was little my parents told me stories that they're parents told them. By making this connection I now better understand the way living in the 60's actually was.
