Summary

Chapter 6-9

In chapters 6-9 of the outsiders, Johny and Ponyboy were trying to put out a fire in the church they were staying at but when Johny breaks his back on the way out, the Greasers get back together and prepare for the "rumble" with the Socs. In the chapters assigned this week, I found that Johny and Ponyboy's intrepidity was further demonstrated than in preceding chapters because they rescued young children that Johny and Ponyboy didn't know. I found these valorous actions especially astonishing because "Greasers" tend not to act as the heroes in town and yet they still saved the children. Coming out of the church after saving the children, a part of the roof of the church falls on Johny and breaks Johny's back while Dally's arm got burned from the fire when he went to try and help Johny. Johny and Ponyboy's actions were noticed and before they knew it, they were surrounded by reporters. Darry and Sodapop found out that Johny was injured and came to see Johny and Ponyboy. When Darry and Sodapop arrived at the hospital where Johny and Dally were staying, Ponyboy and Soda hugged each other right away but, when Darry saw Ponyboy he started to cry which was rare for him. Ponyboy, Soda and Darry got back together and things began to go a lot better. After they went home, the next day, Darry and Soda had to work so Two-Bit looked after Ponyboy for the day. They went outside for a walk when the Socs blue Mustang pulled up. Randy the Soc explained to Ponyboy that Randy wasn't going to come to the rumble because he believes that it won't gain or achieve anything if they fight. After the death of his friend Bob the Soc, Randy became sick of fights. Towards the end of the chapters that were assigned, Cherry Valance told Two-Bit and Ponyboy that the Socs were gonna fight fairly at the rumble, no weapons, the same way as the Greasers were going to fight. I predict that the Greasers and the Socs will come face to face but, decide not to fight and to live as friends from then on.
