Director-Lauryn

1- How might you have ended the book differently?
2- Why would Johnny write the letter to Ponyboy?
3- How might Ponyboy's life change for the better?
4- Why would Ponyboy want to believe Johnny was still alive?
5- Why should Ponyboy care so much about his grades?
6- Why might have the author killed of Dally and Johnny?
7- How could the book change if Johnny didn't die and got caught for Bob's murder?
8- How will the lives of all the other boy's play out?
9- How could the Greasers and the Socs get along?
10- Why did Ponyboy keep saying he killed Johnny?
11- Why might Randy feel so much sympathy for Ponyboy?
12- What might have happened if Johnny didn't stop Bob from drowning Ponyboy?
13- What would happen to Ponyboy if he got sent to a boy's home?
                   Passage Picker:

1.My first passage is when Ponyboy thought "I shouldn't be here, and Steve shouldn't be here, and Soda shouldn't be here, and Two-bit shouldn't be here, were greasers but not hoods, we don't belong here with this bunch of future convicts" before the rumble.

This is important to the story because Ponyboy believes that they shouldn't be there, like they're different from the others and they should have it better. He believes that they deserve it better because of how hard they work and mow close to a family they are.

2. My second passage is right before johnny died, he said "stay gold, ponyboy stay gold.."

This is important to the story because johnny a key part in the story has just died. His death caused many things afterwards as well such as dallys death. Also johnny made a reference to his favorite poem when he said that, i think he was telling ponyboy not to change anything about himself.

3.  My third Passage is when Ponyboy thought to himself "I knew he would be dead, because dallas winston wanted to be dead, and he always got what he wanted."

This is important to the story because dally, another important character in the story died.He died because he raised a gun at the police and they shot him, it had another devastating emotional effect on the gang, they were all emotionally unstable.

In the book the socs (rich kids) and greasers (poor kids) have gang fights. Ponyboy just wants his oldest brothers Darrys love, but he doesn’t realize that darry is so strict with him because he loves him. Soda the second oldest brother, can't stand the fighting that always happens between  Ponyboy and Darry, but no one realizes  that Soda is struggling with the fighting and that Sandy moved away. In the end Soda runs away , Ponyboy and Darry find him a bit later and Soda explains everything, that he has enough with fighting and the situation with Sandy. In that moment Ponyboy realizes what Darry did for them.

Summary

Chapter 6-9

In chapters 6-9 of the outsiders, Johny and Ponyboy were trying to put out a fire in the church they were staying at but when Johny breaks his back on the way out, the Greasers get back together and prepare for the "rumble" with the Socs. In the chapters assigned this week, I found that Johny and Ponyboy's intrepidity was further demonstrated than in preceding chapters because they rescued young children that Johny and Ponyboy didn't know. I found these valorous actions especially astonishing because "Greasers" tend not to act as the heroes in town and yet they still saved the children. Coming out of the church after saving the children, a part of the roof of the church falls on Johny and breaks Johny's back while Dally's arm got burned from the fire when he went to try and help Johny. Johny and Ponyboy's actions were noticed and before they knew it, they were surrounded by reporters. Darry and Sodapop found out that Johny was injured and came to see Johny and Ponyboy. When Darry and Sodapop arrived at the hospital where Johny and Dally were staying, Ponyboy and Soda hugged each other right away but, when Darry saw Ponyboy he started to cry which was rare for him. Ponyboy, Soda and Darry got back together and things began to go a lot better. After they went home, the next day, Darry and Soda had to work so Two-Bit looked after Ponyboy for the day. They went outside for a walk when the Socs blue Mustang pulled up. Randy the Soc explained to Ponyboy that Randy wasn't going to come to the rumble because he believes that it won't gain or achieve anything if they fight. After the death of his friend Bob the Soc, Randy became sick of fights. Towards the end of the chapters that were assigned, Cherry Valance told Two-Bit and Ponyboy that the Socs were gonna fight fairly at the rumble, no weapons, the same way as the Greasers were going to fight. I predict that the Greasers and the Socs will come face to face but, decide not to fight and to live as friends from then on.

Text to self- The book The Outsiders I find is about family and friends sticking up for one another. This reminds me of how I would do anything for my friends and that family only wants what's best for you. In the story Johnny and Ponyboy jump inside a burning building to save the lives of children they didn't even know. This connection helps me realize that no matter who you are or where you came from we can all have are superhero moments.

Text to media- After reading 3/4 of the book The Outsiders, it reminds me of the movie Grease and how there's gender groups like the Pink lady's and the Blue Birds and how Sandy had to change her appearance to be with Danny. This really makes me understand that back then and even now, different classes of living and genders are treated unfairly.

Text to world- In the Outsiders book there's going to be a rumble between the Socs and the Greasers. The connection I made to this is when the shooting at the new outlet happened between the two gangs during the holidays. I now understand that maybe fictional and real life aren't so different after all, and how violent we actually are.

Text to self- The Outsiders is based on a 60's timeline. The connection I made this part of the book is that both of my parents were born in the late 60's, and how i've always wanted to see what it would be like to live back then. When i was little my parents told me stories that they're parents told them. By making this connection I now better understand the way living in the 60's actually was.

Passage picker

1. "You get hardened in jail. I don't want that to happen to you. Like it happened to me..." (Page 90)

I think what Dally meant when he said this was, that Ponyboy said Dally is known to be the meanest  in the gang, the complete opposite of Johnny and Ponyboy. Probably because he went to jail one to many times, and he doesn't want them to turn out like he did.

2. "I wouldn't have. I would have let those kids burn to death." (Page 115)

When Randy said this, I think he was trying to tell Ponyboy that he isn't as brave, or as selfless as him, and Johnny because if he was in that situation he wouldn't have risked his life on saving them and would of just left the children to die.

3. That way you could tell the other guy was human to. (Page 118)

I think that this statement meant that The Socs may seem un-humane and cruel. But  when Randy said that he didn't want to fight, that made Ponyboy realize that The Socs are people to. And even though a part of them hates the greasers, another part of them is just as scared as they are.

4. "You can see it good from the East Side, too," (Page 130)

I think what Ponyboy meant by this was that even thought him and cherry and from two different worlds, they still can share and admire the same sunset with it being just as good on the east side, as it is on the south.

The Outsiders Passage Picker Paris Tack

  The  Outsiders
           Chapter 6-8
Passage :
1.  “We’re goin’ back and turn ourselves in,” page 87,      passage 4-5

I chose this passage because, Johnny is planning to turn himself in. Johnny killed a soc before and he ran away with Ponyboy, to a church to not get caught by the Cops and now he is planning to go to the cops and turn himself in. I thought this is significant to the story because I don’t know what is going to happen to Johnny.

2.  “I’m sorry…” page 98, passage 27

This passage is important because, Ponyboy says that he is sorry for running away. Now he realised that Darry did care for him, thats why I think it is so important.

3. “that they’re thinking about putting me and Soda in a boys’ home or something?” page 108 ,passage 20-21
I chose this passage because, Dally went to visit Ponyboy and Johnny at the church. After they went to go eat something they return to the church, only to find out that the church is burning. First Ponyboy,Johnny and Dally stand there, but Ponyboy hears children in the burning church. There was a class trip and a few kids went missing, Ponyboy figured the children were in the church. So Ponyboy and Johnny run in the burning church to save the children, Ponyboy gets unconscious and wakes up in an ambulance. In the hospital were news reporters and the story was published. The story also mentions Darry,Soda and Ponyboy shouldn’t be  separated after working so hard to  stay together. I think it is important because, I don’t know if the brothers are going to be separated or not.

4. “ And tonight...people get hurt in rumbles, maybe killed.I’m sick of it because it doesn't do any good. You can’t win, you know that, don’t you?” page 116, passage 31 page 117 passage 1

I think that passage is important because, Randy one of the Socs says he doesn’t want to fight anymore. He also says that Bob just wanted that his parents tell him no and maybe if they did Bob would still be alive. I think it is important because, maybe every soc just wants to hear no and thats the reason why they beat the Greasers up, to get in trouble and they're parents saying no to them.

The Outsiders Connections Chapters 3-6 by Paris Tack

      The Outsiders
               Chapter  3-6

Connection 1, Text-to-self:
From the chapters we had read this week, I could make a few connections.
The First Connection I chose is about what Cherry said “I can’t stand fights...I can’t stand them…” I chose this as a Text-to-self connection, because I think the same way as cherry does. Fights are terrible no matter how you look at it,most of the time someone gets hurt. Thats why i can understand Cherry, she doesn’t want anyone to get hurt for nothing. The impression I got from cherry is that she likes the adventures and dangerous side of the greasers, but she still cares about her reputation as a nice girl.I am sort of the same I would like to go on lots of adventures,be in a gang, find interesting secrets and do lots of really stupid stuff like the greasers do,but I don't like fights, stealing or breaking laws . Sure it sounds very interesting, but it would not be something I would enjoy, always being scared of the socs, acting tough, hide from the police and always be looked at like you're something bad. Connecting to the character Cherry helped me understand her a bit more and what she might do in the next chapters. It helped me predict Cherrys actions in the next Chapters.

Connection 2, Text-to-media
In Chapter 3 Ponyboy said he was dreaming of bringing his parents back alive. I chose this as a text-to-media connection, because it reminds me of the movie Harry Potter. In the first movie Harry finds a room and in that room is a mirror, the mirror represents the biggest wishes of the person who looks into it. When Harry looks into the mirror he sees his dead parents and wishes for them to be back alive. Thats helped me visualize how Ponyboy is feeling.
Connection 3, Text-to-world:
In the story Ponyboy and Johnny ran away to a church and when Dally went  to visit them, he said : “ You two want to go get something to eat first? I skipped breakfast and I’m about starved”.
I chose this as a Text-to-world connection because, in the news there is always something about starving kids, all over the world. I once read that, If the wider build people would all slim down, exercise, eat healthy and not as much there would be enough food for everyone . Thats why i thought that it would make a good connection. This helped me visualize how hungry dally was.

Passage Picker-Nahil

Passage Picks

1. "I killed him, he said slowly, I killed that boy." page 56 last paragraph

This passage explains that Johny the greaser had killed Bob the soc while Ponyboy was being drowned by the group of socs. I thought this was significant because it could play a key role in predicting Johny's actions later on.

2. "Hop the three-fifteen freight to Windrixville, Dally instructed." page 61 last paragraph

I chose this passage because it helped me make an inference that Dally had travelled similarly to what Johny and Ponyboy were about to do. This gave me an insight to Dally's past.

3. "Here!, Dally handed me a shirt about sixty-million sizes too big."

I chose this passage because it empha'sizes' how large the shirt was compared to Ponyboy. This helped me visualize the scene and scenario.

4. "The next four or five days were the longest days I've ever spent in my life."

This helped me feel/understand how Ponyboy felt at this point, very bored. This passage made me wonder if Johny was feeling the same way, or completely different.

Connections-nahil

Connection #1

From the chapters that were assigned, I was able to make some connections. For my first connection, I could connect to "he couldn't stop making funny remarks to save his life." This was a text to self connection because I believe that I am similar. In the text, Ponyboy says that "you couldn't shut up that guy" and teachers and friends from my last school had told me this during past years. This character and I are alike in this way because we both like to get our two words in. Connecting to this helped me relate to what kind of character this was and how he might act in the next chapters. Therefore, this connection helped me predict this characters action in the next chapters.

Connection#2
This connection is a text to media connection because I have heard watched tv shows showing characters with cuts and bruises on them for dramatic effect. In the text it says, "nice-lookin bruise you got there... Nice cut too," which might make a reader imagine how this character would look at this point in the story line. A few years ago, I used to watch a tv series called Arrow, in almost every episode there was fighting and almost every episode that there was fighting there was also injuries. This relates to the text because in the text, the character suffered violence and from violence came injuries. This connection helped me visualize the character at this point during the story.
Connection#3
In the text, there are two main groups/gangs. I am making a text to world connection because around the world there are different groups/gangs just like in the story and sometimes don't get along just like the greasers and the socs in the story. Last year when I was in Toronto, at a mall, there was an argument between two people from different gangs that couldn't come to an agreement. One of the people pulled out a gun and shot 3 times in the air before shooting a fourth time at the other person. This relates to the text because the two groups in the story might have an arguement and not be capable of solving it. This helps me predict what might happen with these two groups if they come to a disagreement later on in the story.

summary-maisy

The book "The Outsiders" (by S. E. Hinton) is so far about a teen gang called The Greasers.
The Greasers is made up of 3 brothers, Pony Boy, Soda Pop, Darry, and 3 friends, Johnny, Steve, and Dally.

Although at times they seem threatening, and treacherous they have another side of them selves that care, and are there for there friends no matter what.
But, they always have to keep an eye out for another vicious gang called The Socs (aka The Socials), who enjoy spending their time beating up The Greasers.
All of which have to deal and learn from the dangerous consequences of there violent life styles.

1.text to self: In the outsiders a 14 year old boy named ponyboy says that a while back he thought he was the only person who liked movies as much as he did, and at one point I thought i was the only person who liked football as much as i do. these two things connect because both me and ponyboy have a love for something and we both used to think that we were the only people that liked doing that thing (playing football, watching movies). Making this connection helps me better understand the story because i have a better understanding for how he feels at that time.

2.text to world:In the outsiders ponyboy was describing how handsome soda was and how girls actracted to him like flies to honey and so i thought "wow just like channing tatum!"He is a real life person.those two things connect because both of the people have girls attracted to them like flies to honey! this connection helps me understand the story because now i understand how handsome soda is.

3.text to media:In the outsiders ponyboy gets jumped by a group of rich kids called socs (socials) and stuff like that happens all the time in the real world and i see it on the news sometimes and those two things connect because they are almost the exact same(somebody getting jumped by a gang)except one is in a book and one is real.Making this connection helps me better understand the story because i understand how dangerous getting jumped by a gang is.

P.26, second paragraph
'' You take up for your buddies, no matter what they do. When your a gang, you stick up for them, stay together, like brothers, it's not a gang. It's a pack.''

Yes this book is based on gangs, guns, fights but that doesn't mean they don't care and love for one another, they just tend to show it in a different way. I think this passage explains just that and how even a soc who doesn't like them can even realize that they think of one another as family and behind the toughness there is love.

P.8, last sentence
'' Soda merely cocked one eyebrow, a trick he'd picked up from two-bit. '' It seems to run in this family.''

This passage, I find explains the character of  Soda and the way the writer tried to portray the character. Soda's character is very playful, yet emotional and caring sometimes for his gang, especially for his younger brother Ponyboy.

P.11, last paragraph
'' Johnny Cade was last and least. If you can picture a little dark puppy that has been kicked too many times and is lost in a crowd of strangers, you'll find Johnny.''

This passage really made me realize that you can't judge a person by what's on the outside because you don't know there story. In the book Johnny had been through a lot in the past year, getting beat up by the socs made him feel useless and powerless. Hearing what happened made me feel sorry and hope that no one as to go through that.
